Fort Worth Friends- It's time for another Arts Goggle !!!

This festival of art, live music, food & drink happens a couple of times a year in Fort Worth’s Near Southside. The happenings are centered around Magnolia Avenue, with events also occuring on 8th Avenue . It’s a lively pedestrian-oriented event that always guarantees a great time and plenty of awesome art, photography, sculpture, and music.

The weather is supposed to be beautiful and this is the perfect opportunity while you are "out and about " to come say hello and have some FUN !

A repousse piece to be proud of

I love it so much and it is a locket- the owl head opens and closes on a hinge!

I am posting it again to remind myself of what I am capable of - I love repousse and I am happy to say that my friend Lindsay loves it as much as I do. Here is a photo of her styling out my power necklace and my favorite cowgirl shirt in Argentina! Once you learn some basic steps and start making your tools you are set! It is how I would like to spend ALL my hours - each and every day !

These photos are of me in jewelry making action. Once Lindsay and I finally got settled into our apartment and got to work we were busy hammering metal. It was a challenge - trying to keep up with our work at the farm and still find time to be creative and have somewhat of a social life!

My favorite picture is of the pitch bowl- it looks so fresh and ready to have a piece of metal plunked in there and be hammered into - repousse style !!!

The bird pendant is still not finished and I just wish that I was sitting beside my teacher Nacho (www.taxcosilver-nacho.blogspot.com) when I pick up the hammer again as I have a few questions about wing-making to ask him- He is such a pro and makes it seem so easy when you are watching him but I will try to get back to my piece within the next few weeks - Then I will post a photo of the finished piece !

Silversmithing in Argentina with Lindsay

You are probably wondering what has been going on with my jewelry life since I have been traveling so much lately...

I went to Argentina to take care of some things for a friend and her farm there . After spending time on the farm - which is a 30 minute drive from the city - my Texas friend Lindsay and I decided to rent an apartment in town. We only had three weeks left but we set up a small makeshift jewelry studio on the balcony and tried to get to work. Since I had traveled from the USA with two suitcases and only half of one of them was full of jewelry tools we were forced to improvise in certain situations. One is that a silversmith needs sulfuric acid or something similar- often referred to as "pickle". The USA provides many other safer options but as we were in Argentina our only option was the real deal. So I set out to find some sulfuric acid- What I came home with was a 25 LITER JUG FULL OF THIS TOXIC ACID !!!!

I only needed a tiny amount but this was the only quantity that they would sell me !
Since neither myself, or three friends (one with a wrench) could get the lid off I ended up taking the whole thing back to the "agro-chemical" company where I bought it. It created quite a stir when two Texan women came in with this HUGE thing of acid and didn't even care if we got the money back - we just wanted to find a safe place to leave it before we had to leave Argentina ! They were very nice and traded us for some gloves but it is an experience to laugh at as trying to explain to them why I had bought it- how it was impossible to get the lid off of it and how I now needed to return it - all in Spanish and with a straight face- funny !

As for the other little hiccup I ran into was the search for flux...
A silversmith must have flux in order to solder . Soldering cannot be done without it and I set out one day to track some down. Not an easy task. After two hours of ducking into various jewelry stores and asking for a tip as to where I could find it I was finally sent off on a 10 block-walkathon to look for a dentist lady who also made jewelry. Just as I thought I had been misdirected and was about to give up I came to the door of a lovely Argentininan woman who had a big white feather in her hair ! She gave me some flux and told me where I could buy some more - at a dentist supply store !

After two days of trying to nail their work schedule down (the people in Argentina take loooooong naps in the middle of the day and the schedules are always erratic). I finally got my flux- a tiny amount but enough to finish the pendant I was working on !

It was a great experience - all of it . Lindsay got to learn a jewelry technique called repousse and I definitely learned that if I return to Argentina one WHOLE suitcase will be full of jewelry tools and all necessary work materials - including a powdered pickle !!!!

I didn't get much finished in terms of jewelry pieces but I made some headway with a repoussed bird pendant and finished one other pendant only .

Lindsay is still working on her piece but I love her design and she did GREAT !!!!
She is a pro already - obviously some more things to learn but she was a great student - and we had a BLAST of course !!

PS- The photos are of the ridiculously HUGE amount of acid - the ridiculously TINY amount of flux and my friend Lindsay in silversmith mode !!!!

Larimar Belt Buckle

This fabulous belt buckle is 92.5 sterling silver and comprised of cast cowrie shells and a bezel set Larimar center stone. The stone comes from the Dominican Republic and has only been mined for the last 35 years (which makes is a relatively new discovery). I love Larimars' light blue tone and felt like it was the perfect stone to mix with cowrie shells as it has a sea/ocean feel to it. It would look great on a leather belt worn with a sassy pair of jeans !

These Faceted garnet beads are a deep, rich wine color. The earrings have little flashes of silver from the Bali flower beads that are on each little beaded "matchstick". When worn, the bracelet makes a "shinka shinka" sound as the beads move around on the handmade silver chain. All findings are 92.5 sterling silver.

This Labradorite necklace is actually one very long strand of beads . It can be wrapped around multiple times for a chunky, "close to the neck" look or can be wrapped just once or twice to be worn long. Very versatile! People always comment on this stone as the beads look like they have 'fire' within them when looked at in the sunlight. It has a sterling silver toggle clasp and 2mm seamless sterling silver bead separators.

This is an owl locket that I made with the help of my teacher in Mexico. It is made of silver 950 and the necklace is made of obsidian beads. The owl(or tecolote as they are called in the state of Guerrero Mexico )was made by the technique of repousse. Repousse is a method that involves chasing and hammering with steel tools that are all made by hand- alternating from the front and back of the sheet of metal which is firmly placed into a bowl of pitch. I am crazy about the technique as it allows you to create a sculptural 3D object from a flat sheet of metal - Amazing !

A 45 rpm spindle adapter is a yellow small plastic insert that goes in the middle of a 45-rpm record so it will play on a turntable. This shape is a symbol for the music enthusiast and I have cut it out in sterling silver to wear as jewelry. These can be found at Blackmail in Austin or Dean-Kingston in Fort Worth. Looks great on a colorful piece of suede.

Two of these belt buckles are made with lost wax cast cowrie shells in sterling silver. The larger flower style belt buckle has kiwi jaspers in bezel settings and they both have a black drusy quartz for the middle stone.

I feel very honored that I was one of three artists chosen for an article in Indulge Magazine about Fort Worth jewelry designers ! The issue came out just in time for Valentine's Day. I hope that you are able to read the article as the print looks very small on a blog! The other two artists are Tamra Novak and Gretchen McClendon. I have only met Tamra a few times but she seems like a really neat lady. Her jewelry is made up of vintages pieces and my Mom loves her work! We have had fun "talking shop" - which is always a fun experience with other artists in your field.

Valentine's Day is almost here !

In the top photo I have chosen pink pearl, white pearl, and garnet earrings .
The two necklaces are screaming- "pick me for the perfect Valentine's Day present".
And the garnet Shinka-Shinka bracelet is gorgeous !!! It feels so luxurious on the wrist .
I mixed up artists in the bottom photo but will post here. The ammonite pendant has a sort of heart shape so I thought it was an appropriate piece for the occasion . Of course the guitar pic with a cross is not a heart shape- but kinda ? And I just thought that I needed to offer something that would work as a gift for a guitar playin-or guitar loving guy too. I rarely have jewelry that is appropriate for men...They are all stamped on the back with my signature swirly S stamp and can be found at Dean-Kingston in Fort Worth as well as purchased from me directly.
The incredible heart earrings and heart pendant are made by my friend Annabel Humber who signs each piece as well.

I think that this belt buckle is one of my favorites. It has bezel set labradorite cabachons and a round grey moonstone in the center. Looks AMAZING in the sunlight! The sweet little necklace and earrings have faceted green amethysts which are top quality. The bracelet is from the "shinka-shinka" family and makes a delicate sound when you gently shake it.

Here is a closeup of my Blue Goldstone Shinka Shinka Bracelet . This beautiful bracelet sparkles in the sunshine but still retains a dark hue. I wasn't exactly sure how this stone got its special glitter so I researched on google and found this information very interesting .

Blue Goldstone is a man-made stone and is made by adding Copper Salts to glass in a furnace. The heat "smelts" the Copper Salts back to Copper which then crystallize in the glass. A blue vegetable dye is added to give the blue colour. The Copper platelets formed this way are suspended in the glass and give it its characteristic glitter ! Goldstone is thought to have originated in Italy, and is still made there today by members of a single monastic community. Legend has it, that it was for a long time a very closely guarded secret how they made it, and even now the manufacture of the material remains the primary source of income for that monastery, even though Goldstone is also commercially made elsewhere these days. Other stories relate how Goldstone is thought to have been discovered by alchemists whilst on their lifelong quest to transmute base metals into gold.

This belt buckle is made of cast sterling silver cowrie shells and has a gorgeous carved moonstone in the middle. I bought the moonstone from an Indian stone dealer in Tucson, Arizona at the International Gem and Mineral Show . This gentleman told me that he carved stones for Steven Dweck. Don't know if that's true or not but he did have a lot of carved cabachons like Steven Dweck uses. I bought moonstones, garnets, and citrines. Fabulous !

Coin pearls... Love them...Have always loved them - so pretty ! I sold this necklace and the coordinating earrings on Fall Gallery Night and I am going to miss it.
This particular strand of coin pearls has a really beautiful luster. I have made a similar necklace to this one before and it got snatched up right away. I like coin pearls in general but it makes all the difference in the world when you string with a high quality strand of coin pearls !

Thought I would post an old photo to show some examples of my "Shinka Shinka "jewelry. I have sold this style over many years and people seem to love them. I make bracelets, necklace, earrings in all different colors and variations . The name truly describes this style as these pieces make a shinky sound when you shake them. Shinka Shinka might seem like silly name but I sure think it is fun to say !

I love wings and these sterling wings seem sort of art-deco to me ...click on the photo to get a better look I am painfully aware that these "photos " are of poor quality - They are actually scans - (not that anyone didn't notice ), but the good news is that tomorrow a good friend of mine is coming over and as she is very skilled with photography I am going to ask her to help me set up a photo tent . Starry Nights

This is a scan of my "starry night" necklace .The stars are made of two pearl stars that are joined together .The hole in this bead runs from north to south so the sterling wire is threaded with round sterling beads and tiny sterling flower beads from Bali . The chain and all jump rings are sterling silver and the two beads at the tips of the dangles are faceted rutilated quartz and they are MUCH prettier in real life !
